Richard Ashworth

Conservative Member of the European Parliament
for the South East of England

Employment and Social Affairs

My second committee in the European Parliament is Employment and Social Affairs. The committee deals with all aspects of employment policy for example; health and safety, vocational training, free movement of workers and pensioners.

The committee also deals with Social Policy such as discrimination in the work place and in the labour market.

In general the centre-right politicians on this committee feel its work programme is too concerned with job protection than job creation. Whilst I support general EU guidelines on employment I do not feel it is this committee's responsibility to meddle in national employment laws.

One issue which I take great interest in is 'Ageism' and the Conservatives have long pushed for the EU Commission to set an example within the Institutions. If you would like to go to my special focus section on AGE please click here
